Bone Apple Tea
A downloadable soundtrack
We based our submission around a famous mishearing of the phrase "bon appétit": Bone Apple Tea. We wrote 3 tracks that each represent one of these words, as well as a "cumulative" track that borrows elements across the other tracks.
Bone
This track borrows ideas from Super Mario Bros. desert music and Iron Maiden's Powerslave album; we were inspired by skeleton characters like Dry Bones (a Mario enemy) and Eddie (the mascot for Iron Maiden, a heavy metal band).
The track starts off with a "Mario desert"-like feel, using hard timbres and semitone clusters reminiscent of bone-like qualities: hardness and brittleness. The A section's main riff is inspired by the title track off of Iron Maiden's Powerslave, and the B section's melody is inspired by Aces High from the same album.
We experimented with a microtonal melody for the A section. We chose the Oud (a lute-like instrument) for the melody and tried to incorporate the use of Arabian jins (tetrachords).

Apple
For this track, we wrote two contrasting accompaniments for the same melody. We arranged them back-to-back to highlight the different associations with the term "apple".
The A section represents apple as a fruit, and focuses on "wooden" sounds; apples grow on trees and they look similar to wood itself. Inspired by the playful and light character of Henry Hall’s Teddy Bear’s Picnic , we created a similar vibe by using elements of a waltz. The orchestration employs wooden instruments: 3 woodwinds (from the clarinet family) and a viola, giving it an overall warm timbre (which we associated with wood, as opposed to cold timbres with metal, rock, or glass).
The B section is based on technology, with Apple Inc. being one of the most recognizable tech companies in the world. In addition to the continued clarinet melody, we orchestrated this section with electric instruments: 2 synthesizers and an electronic drum set. We based the accompaniment around a rapid, unorthodox arpeggio voicing and a bassline featuring large portmentos (smooth pitch bends). These two characteristics are often associated with electronic music.
With two contrasting arrangements behind the same melody, this theme represents the same location under different circumstances — for example, the B section could represent a futuristic snapshot of the A section; we imagine a setting like that of Chrono Trigger, a game involving time travel across the same continent.

Tea
This track illustrates a relaxed, lighthearted afternoon in a teahouse setting. It features the Dizi, Pipa, and Guzheng, giving a distinctly East Asian sound; as well as a round synth to add a modern element to the harmony.
The melody is inspired by singing the lyrics “bone apple tea”, which results in a simple quarter-eighth-eighth-quarter rhythm seen throughout the track.
Bone Apple Tea
This piece extends upon different ideas across Bone, Apple, and Tea, setting a mood distinct from the other 3. This piece is energetic and driving; it uses noticeably more instruments than the other tracks, so it feels particularly grand. These characteristics make it suitable as battle music.
Here is how Bone Apple Tea incorporates ideas from the other tracks.
Bone
- The Synthesizer 2 riff in the intro and A + B sections is derivative of the marimba riff at the start of Bone
- The horn line in the C section extrapolates from the electric piano melody from Bone.
Apple
- The flute + oboe parts in the intro is taken (same notes with rhythmic changes) from Apple.
- The guzheng and violin 1 melodies from the C section are taken (same notes with rhythmic changes) from Apple.
- The synthesizer 2 line in the B section is similar in concept to the synthesizer 1 line in Apple (same instrument, both are fast arpeggios).
Tea
- The first 3 bars of the A + B section melody are taken (same notes with rhythmic changes) from Tea.
- Both Tea and Bone Apple Tea draw inspiration from East Asian music (both use East Asian instruments and have pentatonic-based melodies).
Chef Radish Lore
Chef Radish, an accomplished and globally recognized star chef, has recently taken up the challenge of cooking up something new with three unique ingredients: bone, apple, and tea.

Without breaking a sweat, he whips up new dishes for each of these ingredients, earning high praise from the best food critics.
But what's the fun in breezing through such a challenge? What's a challenge if it's not challenging? Chef Radish decides to push himself beyond his limits by combining all three ingredients in one dish.
After chucking them all in one big cooking cauldron, he stirs it thrice clockwise and twice counter-clockwise... and BOOM an enormous mean looking bully goose (goosoog's evil twin?!) appeared from the cauldron!!! He's trying to take over the city!!!
Can you help Chef Radish defeat this big boss goose and restore peace to the city?!?!?!
Known boss moves:
- Chuck apple: the goose flies very high, out of reach, and drops a big apple on your head!!!

- Spit tea: goose loves tea but it turns out it was still a little too hot to drink... goose spits out some steaming hot tea at Chef Radish!!

- Bone smack: uh oh, you got too close to the goose. It has a big bone to whack you
